Fascinating World Heritage site
The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2021. Dorothea Quarry is a feature of the World Heritage site and is located near between the villages of Talysarn and Nantlle in the Nantlle Valley. Work in the quarry began in 1820 and continued until 1970 after which time the six pits flooded. A circular walk takes visitors around the site, past many derelict buildings including homes and the infrastructure of the quarry. The walk also affords amazing views across the slate landscape to Snowdon.
Dorothea quarry is a wonderful place to visit throughout the year and provides plenty of interesting elements for dogs to explore. The circular route only takes around 40 minutes to complete and so is a great option for short outings and older dogs who can’t manage more demanding routes.
